Session Nine : A Temple Unto God (The People of God as a Dwelling Place For The Spirit)

I. What Happened At Pentecost?
• Acts 2:1-13
• The Jewish Lens
o It was an anticipated event
o The story of God’s new world coming to birth . . . the new covenant
o The renewal of temple and torah
o Renewal of Torah
• Luke tells the story in a way that is reminiscent of the way Moses was given the Law
? The law was the way of the life for the people of the OT
• The Spirit was given as the renewed law . . . as the new way of life
? Not a law written on tablets of stone, but rather a law the was written on the hearts of the people
• Pentecost was always celebrated as the feast of the giving of the law (50 days after Passover)
o Renewal of Temple
• The glory of God returning to the temple
• The nations would be drawn by the glory
• Luke recording of the events in Acts 2 would have awakened these thoughts in the minds of the people
• The new world was set in motion . . .
II. The Spirit of God in the Early Church (Role of Spirit)
• The Spirit of God in the NT is the life giving Spirit and the life sustaining Spirit . . . was and is the creative force behind the new humanity
• Life Giving
o Individual : Creator of the relationship between God and man
o Created reconciliation between Jew and Gentile
o On Pentecost the Spirit welcomed the Gentiles into the people of God
• Life Sustainer
o Through the giving of the gifts
o The Spirit gives gifts to the gathered community (church), to each person in the community, as a means of edifying (to build up) the body. So that we can build each other into the temple of God (Ephesians 2)
III. People of God as a Dwelling Place For The Spirit
• We are the place where heaven and earth meet
• This is why we exist, why we send people out . . . how we are the missional church
