with intention

I handed in my application for school this week. Here's how my 300 word essay came out:

Why do you want to become a Nurse?

The first thought that comes to my mind when I think of nursing is servanthood. I see it as a position in society that requires selflessness. This level of engagement with suffering leads me to believe that only those with a deep commitment to human need will be able to endure. It is no surprise that the individualism that marks our society has left a hole in this field.

My mother is an RN. I remember the “horror stories” she would tell at the dinner table from working third shift in the ER. I remember playing “one-bounce” volleyball with the cardiac rehabilitation patients. I remember the cards and flowers that would come to our house from grateful patients. Although she has given a great deal of herself, she has also greatly received from the people she serves. Her example motivates me to pursue nursing as a vocation.

Another important factor in my decision is the medical profession’s history of unbiased social service to all people in need. Social status, class, and race are equalized when people find themselves in need of medical attention. Displaced from their daily environment, the patient becomes powerless and vulnerable, placing themselves willingly in the care of others. I want to be one whose presence brings to each patient the full dignity and respect that they deserve as humans.

After school my hope is to work at Mount Carmel West. My wife and I are moving, along with our three children, to the neighborhood of Franklinton to be good neighbors. We are committed to serving the near west side of Columbus. Mount Carmel West has remained in this forgotten neighborhood, despite all of its challenges, as a symbol to its people that the ill will not be abandoned simply because of their poverty.
